Simple Plan – Back From The Dark Side

Following more than a decade of pure success, Simple Plan is set to return to our shores on the back of their latest release, and 4th studio album, the pop punk party rock masterpiece Get Your Heart On.

Music Feeds: Hey Dave, how you doing?

David Desrosiers: Did you say ‘How you doing?” I thought you were meant to say ‘how you going?”

MF: Which one do you guys say?

DD: No, no, we say ‘doing’ but you know what? When we’re in Australia we love to say ‘going’, we get a kick out of it, we think it’s great, you know ‘how you going?”. Cos in French, we say ‘how you going?” so we don’t say ‘how you doing’ so for us, French Canadian it makes sense, we think you going it right”

MF: I think we got it right also! ‘Going” it rolls off the tongue. So where abouts in the world are you now?

DD: I am at home, believe it or not, for the first time this summer, but I’m leaving tomorrow morning, ha. So I’ll pack my bags after this interview. We’re heading over to Korea tomorrow morning; we’re doing a little south East Asia run. Then we go straight to Europe until mid September. Then we come back here for a special show with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and then we are going down under!

MF: Cool – that’s a really busy schedule

DD: Yea – but we can’t wait. You know? It’s a lot of touring, it’s a lot of work, but the big light at the end of the tunnel is Australia, my friend.

MF: Well, it sounds like everything is going well in the world of Simple Plan?

DD: It is! We can’t complain. We’ve been playing a lot of the shows in the States now. We just finished up on the Vans Warped Tour; it was a lot of fun. We’ve been doing Warped Tour for so long it was great to go back to it. Yea, we’re just touring non-stop for this record. We’ve already been to Europe, already been to Japan, now we are going back to Europe and back to Japan. We want to go everywhere but there’s only so many days in a year you know?

MF: Only so many countries you can visit I guess!

DD: It’s the best problem a band can ever have.

MF: It really must be a tough life! So Simple Plan started off in 1999, that’s 12 years together without a single line-up change. So many bands have failed here, what’s your secret?

DD: You know what? The secret to that is that right now we could all be marriage counsellors. We are now so good at knowing what buttons not to push, what buttons to push and when to push them; it’s like communication makes it so much easier. And I mean we are all getting older and we’ve gotten to know each other better. It’s kind of like we’re all married … but we’re not having sex … with each other.

MF: Simple Plan really did pioneer the whole pop punk movement, having been only 9 at the time Simple Plan came around, you’ll have to explain to me: has the pop punk scene changed much since 1999?

DD: I think it’s always going to be around, no matter what. Look at bands like Blink 182 and Green Day. I remember when we got signed in 2000, some people said that pop punk bands were going to die in the next couple of years. Now look at us! 11 years later and our record is doing really well in parts of the world and we couldn’t be happier with the reaction of the fans right now, you know? And we’re getting new fans every day as well. We can’t complain. I think pop punk will always be in a good place.

MF: So what can you tell us about the new album?

DD: Well, the new album is kind of like a throw back to the first two records we did, as far as the overall vibe, well our last record was a lot more introspective and a bit more from our darker side, I mean, we’re all really proud of that record and our fans were very pleased with that record as well. But after playing a lot of the songs live, we felt that we needed to get back that fun … energy … power. That’s why we threw back to the spirit of the first two records. There are a lot of songs that are about having a good time, stuff like that. We like to not take ourselves too seriously, and this is the result. You can be serious when it’s time to be serious, but you also need to have fun when it’s time to have fun.

MF: Exactly, that’s the law of life! So with Get Your Heart On you have guest appearances from Alex Gaskarth from All Time Low, Natasha Bedingfield and of coarse Rivers Cuomo, what was this experience like?

DD: Again, like I said we wanted to have fun, we wanted to party and to party you have to invite friends, and you have to invite some girls as well, so Natasha Bedingfield had to be on the record. To have Rivers Cuomo on the record was like a dream come true for all of us. We all grew up listening to their music. The first American tour we ever did, we had a Winnebago, now there were no iPods back then and the Rivers Cuomo CD was played almost the whole time in the RV, almost non-stop. When we heard he was doing collaborations and co-writing, we took the song to him and he dug it and said he’d sing on it! It’s even cooler for me though, I get to sing his parts live … every night! That’s quite an honor.

MF: Rad dude! So you haven’t been to Australia since 2008 – it’s been a couple of years, what are you looking forward to the most?

DD: Oh god … the weather, the beautiful scenery. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to put my feet in the sand. Any nice beach. You guys have such beautiful land, such a nice place in the world. It’s so precious to us. We really appreciate coming down. We think Australians and Canadians are pretty similar.

MF: Really? I’ve always thought that too!

DD: Maybe you guys are a little better looking?  We accept that you know, we’re cool with that. Ha ha and very friendly and very open.

MF: Aw, you know how it is!

Pop punkers Simple Plan have just alerted their Australian fans to a big announcement regarding the band, set to be revealed on triple j tomorrow evening, and we should all know what that means by now – Vans Warped Tour Australia 2013!

The thinly veiled statement from the French Canadian 5-piece simply reads, “Hey Australia, be sure to tune into triple j from 10:15pm tomorrow. The boys have some exciting news to share!” We know the Warped Tour lineup announcement is set to be revealed on triple j’s punk show Short. Fast. Loud. tomorrow night, and the show kicks off at 10pm.

There’s almost no question – Simple Plan are being added to the Warped Tour Australia 2013 lineup. The band were here in 2011 as well as just last year in support of their latest album Get Your Heart On and now it looks like they’ll be backing it up three years running.

It’s already been announced that there’s no sideshows for Vans Warped Tour Australia this year, so this is it, Plan Fans – you’ll want to snap up your Warped tickets quick smart when they go on sale. Stay tuned for the full lineup announcement tomorrow night, and in the meantime check out all the latest Warped Tour Australia rumours (and now a solid confirm) as well as our complete guide to all things Warped.

Vans Warped Tour Australia 2013 Lineup Announcement

The 2013 Australian Vans Warped Tour line up announcement is finally here, featuring a swag of local and international acts joining the recently confirmed Simple Plan, including The Offspring, Australia Warped veterans New Found Glory, The Used, Parkway Drive and a stack more!

Every Warped features an array of acts and genres that evolved from classic punk rock, with scrappy local acts as well as scene veterans and stars of the moment, and in that venerable style this lineup features a mix of classic punk and newer core acts, including rumoured acts Tonight Alive, For All Those Sleeping, Kids In Glass Houses and The Dangerous Summer.

Vans Warped Tour was revived in Australia this year for the first time since ’02 by Warped top dog Kevin Lyman, capably assisted by Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah and his wealth of local knowledge. Since the announcement of the festival’s return back in February, the pair have been hand-crafting a festival especially tailored for Australian music lovers while still retaining that classic DIY Warped Tour spirit

The festival kicks off on 29th November at Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds, making its way through Coffs Harbour, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and finally Adelaide. Unfortunately Perth won’t be getting their Warped fix this year, but as consolation they will also be the ONLY city to receive sideshows (though none from Simple Plan).

Ticketing information was also revealed just last night – Warped tickets have been priced at $99+bf, and are set to go on sale next Thursday, 18th July.

As a special treat for those who stayed up and waited for this epic lineup, we’ve got an exclusive announcement interview from Warped features New Found Glory, who we spoke to just a few hours ago. Let them say hi as you check out the line up below!

As you may already know, Simple Plan have announced a headlining gig in Perth to coincide with their duties as one of the many attractions at Vans Warped Tour Australia and their drummer, Chuck Comeau, was kind enough to touch base with Music Feeds recently.

Having spent many months touring throughout North America as part of Warped, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who’s more of an authority on the tour than the Simple Plan guys. Speaking to us from LA, Chuck told us why he feels Australians deserve Warped and why he is personally stoked to be turning to Australia under the Warped banner.

He also explained that the band are currently hard at it on their fifth album, the follow up to Get Your Heart On. Keeping his cards fairly close to his chest, Chuck told us that the band have just kicked the recording process off and revealed just enough about the album to get us salivating – we won’t have to wait too much longer to hear it, either.

Check out the full interview and details for the Perth show below. This episode will be available for download soon.

While making the rounds at Vans Warped Tour Australia 2013, we managed to catch up with lead guitarist Jeff Stinco and rhythm guitarist Sébastien Lefebvre of Simple Plan, following-up with the band, having previously chatted with drummer Chuck Comeau for Music Feeds Podcast.

We chatted to a tanned Jeff and Sébastien, with the boys having come to Warped from a session at Sydney’s Coogee Beach. “We’re starting to know our way around,” said Jeff, “I kinda go with the flow [laughs],” he added, before deferring to Sébastien. “I never remember where we go, I know we always have a good time, we have a few friends here that take us around and it’s always fun.”

The guys explained the importance Simple Plan places on fan interaction. “It’s important for us, like before the shows or after the shows we always meet a few fans. We have a meet-and-greet with our fan club right before the show, so even on this tour we’re actually taking a minute to meet ‘em.”

Simple Plan Writing With Mark Hoppus And All Time Low Frontman

Having hung around each other’s projects for years now, Simple Plan have finally sat down with Blink-182‘s Mark Hoppus, and Alex Gaskarth, frontman of All Time Low, to get some proper work done. According to the social media channels of each of the parties, they recently got together to write a song.

Simple Plan frontman Pierre Bouvier first revealed that the much fantasised-about collaboration was finally becoming a reality via his personal Instagram channel, writing, “Good f’ing morning folks!!! Psyched about today! Gonna write some tunes with [Alex Gaskarth] and [Mark Hoppus] today!”

Mark Hoppus later took to Twitter to confirm the news, jokingly stating that the session “will be disastrous”. After working on his French Canadian skills, the singer and bassist opined, “Avril Lavigne is getting divorced and I’m working with Simple Plan. Could Canada’s day get any worse?!”

However, despite Hoppus’ lamentations, Gaskarth insisted that it was a “great writing day”. Hoppus had previously collaborated with All Time Low on the Soundwave-bound pop punk outfit’s music video for 2009’s Weightless, in which both he and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz make an appearance.

Meanwhile, Hoppus established a working relationship with Simple Plan after contributing vocals to the Canadian outfit’s 2002 single I’d Do Anything. Gaskarth also made an appearance on a Simple Plan track, contributing vocals to Freaking Me Out from the band’s 2011 release Get Your Heart On!

PREMIERE: Simple Plan Go Full Baywatch Alongside The Hoff/Nelly In New Video

Simple Plan are stepping out from their image as your high school obsession and giving longevity a red hot go, with their fifth album due to be released next year, and Music Feeds is pumped to be able to bring to you the Australian premiere of the first official video for the unnamed LP, for single I Don’t Want To Go To Bed.

First bursting on to the scene in the mid-noughties the Canadian outfit took us all by storm with their accessible brand of punk pop and seem to be sticking pretty close to the same algorithm in the new clip, which sees Simple Plan going full Baywatch, red speedos and all and roping in the man himself to cameo, David Hasselhoff.

Oh, yeah and motherfucking Nelly is on the track as well. NELLY!

Shot in California and directed by Mark Staubach, the prep for the video saw the guys getting their shred on ahead of showing all that skin. “I’ve been lifting weights for about a month now,” said Sébastien Lefebvre, “(and) basically not eating” with Pieree Bouvier claiming he’s been on a two-week detox: “I’ve been eating only salmon.”

Check out the Australian premiere of the video below, grab your own copy of the single here, and join us in welcoming back Simple Plan. We missed ya!

If you’ve been a fan of pop-punk at some point over the last 15 years, you’re probably going to be intrigued and even a little perplexed by this generation-crossing Christmas cover featuring members of All Time Low, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and Goldfinger.

The cover of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas sees 5SOS’ Ashton Irwin, Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden, Simple Plan’s Pierre Bouvier, Goldfinger’s John Feldmann and All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth come together as The Holidaze.

The track (below) starts with a traditional rendition of the song full of sleigh bells and sweeping piano, but eventually the pop-punk roots come out. Just before the two minute mark the song amps up the tempo, cranks the guitars and lays on the drums. It’s exactly what you’d expect to hear from the five-piece.

All the profits from the song are going to The Ryan Seacrest Foundation, which raises funds for kids through entertainment and education. What’s more, the track is currently free to download. Think of it like an early Christmas present.

Two of the bands who have members involved in The Holidaze, All Time Low and Good Charlotte, are actually heading out on tour together through the UK and Ireland next February. It’s unlikely though that you’ll hear them play this tune together, as February might be just a tad too late to pull out the Christmas tunes.

INTERVIEW: Simple Plan’s Chuck Comeau Talks Staying Relevant And Playing The Hits

This September, pop punk luminaires Simple Plan will be returning to Australia for their first run of headline shows since 2013. In that time, they’ve written, record and released their fifth studio album Taking One For The Team.

The record would debut at the pointy end of the charts in five countries – Australia included – strongly suggesting the world still needs Simple Plan. Now as they gradually make their way Down Under, Music Feeds checked-in with drummer Chuck Comeau, currently in Hawaii.

Music Feeds: So is this some well earned down time, or is this a business trip to Hawaii?

Chuck Comeau: Actually, it’s a little vacation! We’ve been travelling nonstop and we’ve had five days off. It’s my son’s 1st birthday so we’ve gone to Hawaii. It’s a pleasure to be here.

MF: Simple Plan started the year by releasing a new album, and it seems like it’s been firing on all cylinders ever since. It feels like the band is going particularly hard in 2016, is that fair to say?

The record came out this February, and it’s exciting for us to have a chance to have five albums. I think that we all realise how lucky we are, how privileged we are. We wanna go see all the fans. We wanna go play everywhere. We’ve been all over Europe, Japan, Canada, we’ve done a bunch of tours and now we’ve announced South East Asia and Australia. It’s a lot of shows but I’m just excited to be here.

MF: So bands that rose in the 2001 – 2005 pop punk wave have added their bones to the pile. Many who haven’t, arguably should. But Simple Plan are still releasing albums and touring to critical acclaim. What’s been the secret?

I think we’ve always had a really special connection with our fans. Always, since day one we’ve taken a lot of pride by being close with them, and hanging out with them as much as possible. I think that makes the difference.

We know how hard it is to get there, we know how hard it is to be a band; you have to keep people interested. When we go writing a new album, you know, we don’t just go with the first songs we write, we spend a year and half making a special album. We make sure to push ourselves. I think that you need to understand this isn’t something that’s owed to you; it’s something you have to earn. We also haven’t had any line up changes; we haven’t had any one leave. We’re the same guys we were 17 years ago and I think the fans like that.

We never forgot what it’s like to be on the other side. We all grew up being fans and going to lots of shows…You see these people who wait for hours, sometimes three hours after shows to just say hey. I kind of feel like the least we can do is to be grateful and to give them our time. We don’t feel like we have to, like it’s an obligation, we just feel like we should….I think it’s cool to give back.

You’re debut album No Pads, No Helmets…Just Balls (2002) is now approaching its second decade which is an amazing feat. What’s it like performing some of these songs you wrote all those years ago, is it a bit of a head trip to get into the mindset?

You know what, not really to be honest. The hardest thing for us is to pick a setlist. Now that we have five albums it’s really hard to know what to play. We try to make the fans happy but for us, we’ve always been a band that’s excited to play what the fans what to hear. We live to play the hits; we love to play the stuff people enjoy.

We play a lot of early stuff but also lots of new songs. Which is fun because a lot of the fans now are asking for more new songs. They love the last two records! So the hardest part for us is to find a balance.

MF: That would have to be the biggest compliment from your fan base ever!

It feels good man, it feels like the band’s still relevant. Our biggest sellers may be our first and second records, which is fine, I’m very proud of that, but it’s also really cool and a compliment when you have people asking to do the new songs.

MF: You’ll soon be in Australia for a run of headline shows, and you’ve chosen some pretty up-close-and-personal venues, big places but fans will be able to shout out to you sort of thing, is that where Simple Plan is most at home?

What I love about the band is we can do all sorts of different venues. We can do the big festivals, then we can come back around and play a small club and that makes it fun. I think it’s cool to offer the fans different vibes. We always love to go back to where we started and play in a smaller venue. I like the ones when you can hear the fans and see them smiling.
